Millions of years ago the area around Bruce Peninsula National Park was submerged under a tropical sea. As the sea gradually dried up magnesium was absorbed into the limestone creating dolomite. Over thousands of years the softer limestone was eroded by the waves of Georgian Bay creating huge cliffs and unusual rock formations such as the Grotto, located within the park along the shore of Georgian Bay. Built for Alan Napier McNab in the neoclassical style by architect Robert Charles Wetherell, the mansion consists of over seventy rooms covering an area of 18,000 sq. ft.
